NAHN-Vertex Webinar APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD): Hidden in Plain Sight
February 19, 2026 | 8-9pm ET Presented by Vertex and NAHN
AMKD is a genetic kidney disease initiated by the toxic effects of APOL1 gene variants. The APOL1 G1 and G2 variants arose in West Africa in response to resistant trypanosomal infections. Inherited in duplicate, however, the variants produce a range of kidney disease presentations, each with an accelerated path to kidney failure. AMKD is responsible for a significant portion of excess ESKD experienced by people of African ancestry worldwide, including many in the US, Caribbean, and South America who identify as Hispanic or Latino. We aim to raise awareness of the disease and encourage diagnostic use of genetic testing to identify patients as early as possible, as clinical trials of potential therapeutic agents are well underway.
